Profile

AI governance from the inside.

01The Institute

Sid Ahmed Benraouane is the founder of The 42001 Institute, an independent advisory practice helping governments, boards, and enterprises adopt artificial intelligence responsibly — through audits, certification readiness, and executive advisory grounded in international standards.

02Standards Work

He works at AI governance from the inside. As a U.S. delegate to ISO/IEC SC 42, the international committee responsible for artificial intelligence standards, he served on the working group that developed ISO/IEC 42001 — the world’s first certifiable standard for AI management systems. He is a Certified ISO/IEC 42001 Lead Auditor, and his advisory work spans the full arc of the standard: from interpreting the intent behind its requirements to preparing organizations for the audits that test them. His work bridges international standards and European regulation: he speaks and trains on the EU AI Act’s risk hierarchy and conformity assessment requirements, advises on the mapping between the Act and ISO/IEC 42001, and follows the CEN-CENELEC JTC 21 work program — including prEN 18286, the first harmonized AI standard developed for EU AI Act regulatory purposes.

03Publications

Benraouane is the author of more than seven books, including “AI Management System Certification According to the ISO/IEC 42001 Standard: How to Audit, Certify, and Build a Responsible AI System” (Routledge · Productivity Press, 2024), the first practical guide to certification under the standard. He co-authored the AI Risk Management chapter of the IAPP’s official AIGP textbook — the training canon for the world’s AI governance professionals — and writes Field Notes, a continuing series on what ISO/IEC 42001 implementation looks like in practice.

04Advisory + Community

For more than two decades, he has advised government leaders on innovation, digital transformation, and AI strategy, including governments across the GCC and training government leaders through a UN-led, EU-funded program on AI and digital transformation. He chairs the IAPP UAE Chapter, the region’s community of privacy and AI governance professionals, and serves on the board of the Global Innovation Management Institute. He is the author of the Routledge guide to ISO 56002 innovation management, and co-author of a companion Routledge title on managing innovative projects. He has spoken internationally on AI governance, including at the World Government Summit.

05Academic Foundation

Benraouane holds a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, where he taught at the Carlson School of Management. He is based in Dubai.
